Ashi Tsundue Lhamo (also recorded as Ashi Tsundue Lhamo Kurto Khoma Chukmo, and known informally as Lemo) was one of the consorts of Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck, the first hereditary King of Bhutan, and holds a significant place in the history of the Wangchuck dynasty as the mother of the Second Druk Gyalpo. Information about the queens consort of the early Wangchuck period is less extensively documented in published English-language sources than information about the kings themselves, and much of what is known comes from dynastic records and Bhutanese historical scholarship.

Historical Context

Ugyen Wangchuck was enthroned as the first hereditary King of Bhutan on 17 December 1907 at Punakha Dzong, following his unification of the country and his distinguished role as a mediator during the British expedition to Tibet in 1903–1904. In keeping with the customary practice of Bhutanese aristocracy at the time, the king had more than one consort. Each of the royal consorts of the early Wangchuck period occupied a defined role within the court structure, though their lives and individual histories have received comparatively little attention in the historical record available to outside researchers.

Significance as Mother of the Second King

Ashi Tsundue Lhamo is most prominently recorded as the mother of Jigme Wangchuck (1905–1952), who became the Second Druk Gyalpo upon the death of his father in 1926. Jigme Wangchuck's reign lasted until 1952 and was characterised by a period of cautious consolidation: he maintained Bhutan's isolation whilst preserving the foundations of centralised hereditary monarchy that his father had established. As the mother of the succeeding king, Ashi Tsundue Lhamo's place in the dynastic lineage is assured, even if the personal details of her life remain incompletely documented.

The lineage from Ugyen Wangchuck through Jigme Wangchuck continues to the current Fifth King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, making Ashi Tsundue Lhamo a maternal ancestor of the reigning monarch.

Documentation Challenges

The relative scarcity of published biographical detail about the consorts of the First King reflects broader patterns in the historiography of early twentieth-century Bhutan. Royal chronicles and dzong records in Dzongkha contain information not yet fully translated or accessible in English-language scholarship. Bhutanese historians and archivists have more recently begun the work of recovering and publishing dynastic records, and fuller accounts of the queen consorts of the early Wangchuck period may become available as this scholarship progresses.
